A marketing director is a person responsible for the overall marketing operations of an organization or business. The job requires not only having skill in the creative aspect of advertising, but also having the budgetary knowledge needed to plan appropriately. Thus, the marketing director must be an effective manager in terms of both budget, and the creative process. Time at the job will often be split between these two primary functions.

In the creative aspect of the job, the marketing director is responsible for overseeing the operations and planning of the marketing campaigns. In some cases, this will simply involve managing existing campaigns. In other cases, entirely new campaigns will need to be planned. Depending on the organization, and the extensiveness of the marketing effort, this may involve advertising in many different types of media including radio, television, Internet, printed publications and others.

In order to be truly effective and brand the image correctly, the marketing director, also called the director of marketing, will often make sure the message is consistent. When moving from one medium to the next, this consistency can sometimes get lost. Any loss in this consistency will weaken the overall image, and lead to a less effective marketing campaign.

The budget is another primary consideration. Often, because funds in the advertising or marketing budget will be limited, it is up to the marketing director to prioritize the campaign. Depending on the product and the target audience, one may decide to concentrate primarily on the television market, or perhaps it may be determines that printed publications, or Internet adds would yield better results. It should be noted that this is not the personal preference of the director, but usually a decision based on research and an experienced understanding of the market.

Director of marketing jobs are usually obtained in one of two ways. Some candidates will move from smaller organizations to larger ones. This helps them work with larger budgets incrementally throughout their marketing director careers. The other option is to work up the ranks within the marketing department at a single company, getting promoted from within the organization. This may be an advantage for many directors as they will gain familiarity with the brand, target market, and type of campaign being run. Top paying industries for marketing directors include satellite telecommunications, movies and video, and financial investment firms.

Pros and cons of the Director of Marketing Make this a major heading—same as ABSTRACT

If you like leading people, then becoming a supervisor is a natural development in your career. As a sales marketing manager, you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to encourage, educate and, when necessary, discipline individuals under your influence. However, being a manager is exciting during the good times, but it can be quite demanding when drama runs high in the office or numbers don’t meet expectations. The challenges can easily outweigh the benefits for a supervisor who isn’t prepared to deal with the rough seas. Another added benefit to the job is much more money. Who wouldn’t want a raise? More money is more money to those who want to continuously challenge themselves and climb the proverbial corporate ladder of financial success. See Figure 2 on page 5 to see the average salary of the director of marketing.

However, with a salary boost comes an increase in expectations. Those expectations can come in a variety of forms – budgetary, personnel changes, and corporate innovations. For those individuals unable to modulate their stress levels, supervision can begin to feel like a prison sentence despite the lucrative benefits.

Qualities of a Good Marketing Director Make this a major heading—same as ABSTRACT

  • Vision Creator- Great marketing directors are vision creators. One of the most important steps in introducing a product or service successfully to the marketplace is to create a clear, focused conceptof their product or service. To accomplish this, marketing directors must be able to wade through the products or services that their company sells, find its edge in the marketplace, and simplify its features and benefits so that they are easily understood. They don’t necessarily need to create the exact words used in the pitch, but it is important for them to be able to communicate the vision clearly to others.
  • Strong ego- Generally a “design by committee” approach produces terrible marketing programs. When a committee creates a vision or strategy, the results are usually full of compromise, which makes the vision unfocused, diffused, without edge, and flat. If implemented in the marketplace, the result is similar to that of using a dull knife — it doesn’t cut into the marketplace and you lose your potential share. Instead, one person with courage, creating a vision, is almost always stronger than a group effort. This is not to say that a director of marketing should be an island. Effective and successful directors of marketing listen to people inside and outside of the company. They listen to their customers, co-workers, and salespeople.
  • An Artistic Eye-All the great directors of marketing have an artistic eye. Most of the communication that happens between the marketplace, prospects, and the company is visual. However, the marketing manager’s role is NOT to create the visual elements. Good marketing directors let those who have been trained in design and presentation do this. However, it’s important that they have a good sense of visual style — especially within their market

CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

The research I have concluded is set forth as guidance for me to reach my career goals within the next 5 years. In order to secure a position as the Director of Marketing I should start applying to graduate school in order to increase my knowledge within this industry. Once graduate school is complete, enhancing my resume will be my next strategic move.

  1. I should then decide whether or not to stay at the current marketing firm which I am employed, or test the waters somewhere else, preferably at a much larger firm. Starting at the bottom of a company and learning this industry inside has given me the tools I need to succeed on a bigger scale in the professional world.
